The two charts provide some information about the number of marriages and divorces in the United States in the period of 30 years, and the marital status of adult Americans in 1970 and 2000.
As can be seen from the first chart, the population of people who got married leveled off from 1970 to 1980, with about 2.5 millions. In the next two decades, the marriage rate declined slightly, dropping to 2.3 million in 1990. In 2000, the number of marriages reached its bottom at 2 millions. On the contrary, the divorce rate went up gradually from 1970 to 1980 (from 1 million to 1.4 million), which is followed by a significant decrease in the next 20 years. Finally, it recovered to 1 million by 2000.
According to the second chart, in 1970, people who got married accounts for the largest proportion of adult Americans (70%). The people who never married constitute 15 percent. A minority of Americans is widowed (8%) and divorced (1%). In contrast, in 2000, the percentage of married and windowed adults declined whereas the unmarried and divorced adults boomed.
In sum, from 1970 to 2000, United States saw a huge decrease in the marriage rates while the divorce level remained stable. Even though the quantity of married adults fell, it still remained the most common marital status among adult Americans.
