TPO 39: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about a mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period. The author of the passage proposes three hypotheses about this phenomenon, however, the lecturer refutes the theories by giving some logical reasons.
First of all, the author mentions a theory about sea-level change. According to this theory, a decrease in sea level at the end of the Triassic period led to the destruction of coastal and shallow-water species and consequently disturbed the food chain and affect other creatures' life. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this theory by clarifying that coastal and shallow-water species had the ability to adapt to gradual changes in their surrounding environment. As the decrease in sea level was not sudden and took place for several million years, it can not be a cause of mass extinction.
Secondly, the author refers to climate cooling theory. During that period of time, extensive volcanic activities released a huge amount of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere which reduced the global temperature substantially and affected beings' life and led to mass extinction. Conversely, the speaker rejects this premise by explaining that sulfur dioxide had not remained in the atmosphere for a long time. It combines with water in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth as rain. Hence, it can not be considered as a factor of mass extinction.
Finally, the author implies the theory of asteroid strike in which a large asteroid strongly hit the earth and threw debris and dust into the atmosphere which blocks the sunlight for many months or years. It led to the demise of plants and other animal species died as well. However, the lecturer asserts that scientists do not believe in the asteroid strike theory as the evidence of a large asteroid crater on earth dates back to 12 million years before the mass extinction.
