Altruism is a type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for that of another animal or group of animals. Altruism is the opposite of selfishness; individuals performing altruistic acts gain nothing for themselves. Examples of alt

The article states that altruism is a type of behavior in which animal sacrifices its own interests for others. The professor refutes this claim by saying that the deep study of animal behavior suggest selfish behaviour and provides three reasons.
First, the reading states that meerkats stand guard gaining nothing and make other meerkats hunt for food. The professor refutes this by saying that the meerkats who stand guard are the ones who have their stomach full. He states that the meerkats solely allows other meerkats to eat his food only when he is self satisfied.
Second, the article posits that the meerkats acts as a guard to ensure safety to others. However, the professor explains that it is not as it is seen or looks to be. He states that the meerkat when first sees the predator produces the alarm in order to shift the attention of the predator towards a different meerkat or group of meerkats which reduces the harm on itself.
Third, the article states that humans are altruistic due to their food-sharing and organ sharing. The professor opposes this by saying that humans do not easily tend to donate organs because what they gain out it is nothing but some amount of respect and pride which is unvaluable for the kind of deed they did.
In conclusion, both the reading and lecture explains about the altruism about animals and humans. However, the claims made by the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
