Discussing controversial topics with those with contrasting views is not useful because very few people change their mind when questioned about their core beliefs.

I am personally not convinced with the statement "discussing controversial topics with those with contrasting views is not useful". discussing an issue is not trying to change people's minds. Rather, we are gaining new knowledge upon the topic.
discussing controversial topics can actually be brainstormed and gives us some new ideas and insights on the topic. it is very true that people may have different opinions regarding certain topics because we are from different cultures that shaped our values and perspective. However, our beliefs on certain issues may not necessarily helpful and benefit us, although we believe it is. For example, parenting style is always a hot topic and controversial in which what is the best approach to interact with children. some people, especially in western culture, may believe that praising children and no punishing is the best parenting approach. On the other hand, In asian culture, help children to learn self-discipline through certain punishments could be desirable. although we all hold different opinions on parenting, our ultimate goal is to guide children and help them to achieve a better self. through discussing parenting, we are able to exchange ideas and generate some insights, such as what do children need? how can be we improve our parenting in order to have a better relationship with children?
Moreover, through the discussion, it also provides further direction to improve our knowledge on the topic. using the same example-parenting, after we generate some ideas, we may desire to know which approach-whether the western or asian style, is more beneficial to our children. Therefore, with these preliminary ideas, scientists can conduct a study based on these hypotheses, using a scientific method to examine different parenting styles and yield a conclusion which parenting is more desirable to improve the parent-child interaction.
although discussing controversial topics may lead to conflict since our core beliefs are different from each other. As mentioned above, if we try to change other beliefs, it often attacks the opposite view about their faults just want to prove we are right, which the discussion can be useless and result in bitterness and hostility. it is very important to be open-minded and respectful to other values and perspectives in discussion with people who hold diverse opinions.
In conclusion, a discussion on controversial topics is not trying to change other's core beliefs, it is more like to increase our understanding of certain topics and to provide further direction on how to improve the current situation.
