In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects
is to assemble a group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack
a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people has a wider
range of knowledge, expertise, and skills than any single individual is likely
to possess. Also, because of the number of people involved and the greater
resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task
assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and
issues. Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is
more likely to make risky decisions that an individual might not undertake. This
is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members
and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out
to be wrong.
Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the
team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel
better about carrying out the work that is entailed by that decision than they
might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team
member has a much better chance to "shine," to get his or her contributions
and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a
team's overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than
what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or
contribute working alone.
The reading passage and lecture have a conflicting opinion about whether or not it is a great idea that staff need to work as a team to enhance their productivity. The article strongly postulates that group working will definitely boost the company’s prosperity. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that the experiment which testes the team working has grounded in failure and its results oppose the author’s viewpoints by each one.
First and foremost, according to the author of the excerpt, group work allows solving the problems and issues more quickly for using different approaches because there are a lot of people who have various ideas within a group. Nonetheless, the lecture offsets these points by declaring that if the time comes which the group need to reach resolutions, there may a lot of discussions and arguments. As a result, they can’t easily reach the decision they want. In other cases, a few influencers protest against some creative ideas and ignore some members or convenience others to follow their suggestions.
On top of this, the professor in the listening further asserts that after above unfair events, if the team is drop-down, the blame will put on all members’ shoulders even if some of them didn’t participate with activities. These claims refute the writer’s implications about individuals don’t need to concern about the responsibilities of their decision too much because if they do everything together, they will take all the consequences of it together.
The text lastly points out that working as a team is a chance to deliver their voices in the front of their team members and it may be turned into a great opportunity to stand out among their coworkers for their hard-works and direct contributions. The speaker in the lecture counters these indications by insisting that real contributors can’t benefit and be noticed much from the group work because they are evaluated the same as free-riders.
