The passage talks about the altruism which is defined as the sacrifices that an individual makes for another or the group as whole. This behavior is displayed by both humans and animals.
The reading passage talks about the example of marketeer which stands as guard when rest of the marketeers are searching for food. It claims that the marketeer here displays the behavior of altruism, as the guarding marketeer has a higher chance of being killed by the predator. The professor refutes this claim by stating the guarding marketeer has a higher chance of survival as it first sees the predator as is the first to escape. He also adds that guarding marketeer call put the other marketeer at risk instead of itself.
Secondly the passage talks about the guarding marketeer stays on an empty stomach so that the other marketeer can eat. The professor disagrees this by mentioning that the guarding marketeer is already full stomach before it begins guarding. Thus the professor says that this is not the behavior of altruism.
Meanwhile in the human context the passage talks about the donation of kidney or organs as an act of altruism. But the professors differs with this. He says that although the donor is saving a life, in turn he receives appreciation of the donor and the society as well. Therefore the professor does not consider this as an behavior of altruism.
