In this set of materials, the reading passage states that humpback whales migrate long-distance for finding their food or mating aim, and the reading says that for navigation in long-distance, they may use starts like humans. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).
First, the reading indicates that humpback whales are intelligent animals, and they have a high degree of the complex brain, so they may have the cognitive ability to finding their ways base on stars. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that not real connection between intelligence and the ability to navigate exist. For example, some birds like ducks have the ability to navigate their ways, but they have mediocre brains level, so they were born with this ability, and navigation ability does not connect with intelligent.
Furthermore, the reading argues that humpback whales migrate in a straight line, and animals can stay in a straight line if they follow some external object or forces; indeed, humpback whales may use stars as an external force; conversely, what the lecturer believes is different. He points out that an external force is not an external object. It is the magnetic field of Earth that animals use for navigating. Humpback whales have substance in their brain called bio magnetic that follow Erath magnetic, and they can find their ways. So, they do not use stars as an external force for finding their ways.
Finally, according to the reading, when humpback whales want to migrate, their head sometimes move above the water as through were looking upward, and this function called spy-hopping. Animals use spy-hopping when they wanted to see stars for finding their ways. However, the professor believes that some other animals such as sharks do it, but they do not want to migrate. They use spy-hopping to find the animals they want to capture. Also, most of them put their head up during a day; also, stars cannot obvious. So, it is not correct.
