The volcanic island growth cycle
The diagram presents how a volcanic island is formed. Overall, it is a cyclical process which consists of eight stages.
At the first preshield stage, the volcano pillow, which looks like a small hill, is formed below the sea level. Following this stage, the layered hyaloclaster grows above it. Subsequently, the shield stage, which involves two phases, starts. During the first phase, the growing volcano experiences hydro-explosions and the ash cone forms above the hyaloclaster. At the subaerial phase it is already higher than the water surface, and the smoke after the explosions flows above it. At this phase, the shield is already formed above the ash cone. Next, the shield expands during the postshield stage; cinder cones grow at its upper part. After this step, during the erosion and subsidence stage, coral reefs and sediments are formed along the volcano sides. Having experienced this stage, the volcano enters the rejuvenated stage, when it explodes again, causing lava to flow along the reefs and cinder cone to grow. At the seventh stage, the volcano starts merging back into the water, forming lagoons on the reefs. Finally, the island merges into the sea fully.
