In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The prompt states that providing option for the employees to work for four-day a week in exchange for less pay is actually advantageous for the different parties involved. This will ensure the companies to earn profit, help the government in ensuring creation of additional job opportunities and would benefit the individual employees who want to live their life more leisurely and who wish to spend times with their families. However, the lecturer casts doubt on these outcomes of the policy change and below I want to put light on why he doubts on the outcomes.
Firstly, the policy is thought to increase company profits. However, professor stated that the company may not end up earning profit. The extra additional employees that are to be hired might actually increase the additional costs that may require for various activities - training of new employees, extra cabin space, health insurance and so on. Thus, the company may end up in loss due to extra additional costs.
Secondly, speaking about the additional employment opportunities that the policy change is likely to bring, the professor actually do not believe this. He stated that the company may actually turn to its existing workers to work overtime. The majority of employee could work overtime and thus will cancel the need of hiring additional employees. Subsequently, no additional employment opportunities will be created.
Thirdly, coming to the individual employees, the professor actually think that the employees would be in more risk than they will get benefit from the policy change. It is because of the reason that it would reduce the job stability and may jeopardize the employees chance of promotion as the companies might favor five-day week employees to hold the important posts in the company.
