The reading claims that Humpback whales have the ability to navigate by using the location of stars. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.

First, the author argues that there has been some evidence that shows humpback whales have a complex brain that enables them to navigate by using stars, in which such level of complexity is rare among other animals. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although it is true that they are intelligent than other animals, this is not a good explanation for using stars to navigate. In fact, other animals such as ducks which have an average brain capacity and are not intelligent rather than humpback ducks navigate by using the location of stars

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that humpback whales move in a straight line which shows that they rely on external signs for navigation. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that this movement could have different explanations. In fact, maybe they are using their biomagnetic ability. There are some other forces like the biomagnetic field which they can use to move straightly.

Finally, the reading asserts that humpback whales exhibit a rare behavior. They watch the sky while they are in the water. In fact, this behavior is known as spy-hopping behavior. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that it is not restricted to only humpback whales. Some kinds of sharks also have this ability. Indeed, they look upward in order to find a hunt. Moreover, they do it during the day as well, which there is no star in the sky.
