TOEFL T P O 49 - Integrated Writing Task
Both reading passage and lectures are about the probability of using the stars as clues in humpback whales migration. In this regard, the author asserts that there are three evidences to prove that humpback whales use stars in their migration. However, the speaker refutes all of the reasons provided by the writer, and believe that there is no evidence to that relationship between stars and humpback whales migration.
First of all, the essayist holds the view that humpback whales are intelligent; therefore, they have sufficient skills to use stars to navigate by. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that other animals like birds or dogs are enough intelligence, but do not use stars in their navigations or movements.
Secondly, reading passage claims that animals can migrate in straight lines if there are external objects to use or external forces; thus, humpback whales use stars as an external object, because they migrate in straight lines. Nonetheless, the professor in the lecture refutes this claim by stating that sharks are examples of animals that do not migrate or looking animals.
Thirdly, the writer believes that humpback whales have unusual behavior and it is very scarce among marine animals. He says that the name of this phenomenon is spy-hopping and helps them get information about stars. The speaker, in contrast, states that sharks also have this behavior like humpback whales, bud do not migrate or even look at stars. Therefore, such a conclusion from this behavior is pure speculation.
