The graph below shows trends in US meat & poultry consumption
The line graph compares the amount of money was spent on 4 different species (beef, pork, broilers, and turkey) in the US from 1955 to 2012.
Overall, spending on beef & pork remained relatively stable, in comparison with significant and steady rises in the figures for broiler & turkey, respectively over the period surveyed.
In the year 1955, the Americans spent nearly 60 pounds on beef consumption, while the figure for pork was slightly lower, at 50 pounds. Remarkably, over 6 years from 1955, there was no consumption in broilers and turkey. During the following 52 years, beef is significantly more popular than the others, and its consumption reached a peak of 90 pounds in 1976.
By 2012, pork had surpassed beef and dominate the market with being spent on approximately 55 pounds by the Americans, and spending on beef was down close to 50 pounds. In the same year, the figure for broilers was just over at 40 pounds, which was 4 times as much as that of turkey.
