The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The provided line graph illustrates information on merchandise transferred in Britain through four various methods of transport such as road, rail, water, and pipeline over 28 years, that is from 1978 to 2002. The units are measured in million tonnes.
A glimpse over the diagram portray some intriguing patterns. Overall, it is clearly seen that, albeit there were few flaws observed in each manners of transportation, there was a significant rise noted at the end of year 2002. Over the same given period, mode of road transportation carried greater volume of possessions whereas the pipeline technique taken the lesser amount of stocks.
In terms of road transportation, in 1974 the highest amount which was about 70 million tonnes of freight were carried. After a few ups and downs between 75 and 65 millions in 1978 and 1982 respectively, it started to plummet gradually, then reached to 82 million tonnes over 10 years of period after which there were some remarkable fluctuations in between, however it ended at approximately 98 millions in year 2002.
On the other hand, even though the transportation technique of pipeline showed an incessant rise in the given period, it was the method which carried minimal amount of goods compared to other modes. In case of rail and water, in 1974, both modes carried about 40 million tonnes of stocks, while the quantity of goods carried by water rose substantially to about 55 millions in 1982 where, the rail way declined to around 30 millions in year 1984. After which the water way of transportation remained remarkably at the similar level and reached about 66 millions in 2002 after a slightest fall in 1998. With regards of rail transportation, it had slight dip and rise in between the given period and finally reached just above 40 million tonnes.
