In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise, and the skills than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the number of people involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes these creative solution come about because a group is more likely to make a risky decision that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.
Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by that decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to ‘shine’ to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a teams overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.
The reading and the lecture is talking about the group participation in a project. The reading entails the benefits of group accomplishments and provide three reasons to support it. The lecturer is opposed group participation and refute each of the reasons.
First, the passage states that when cluster of people working together, they work fast and it helps to save time. However, the lecturer challenge this statement and says they are not helpful to maintain time rather they delay the project time. He or she also states that, they malingerer the time schedule because of the different members choice regarding the meeting time.
Second, the reading claims that group accomplishment easy to finish the project by taking audacious decision and it also give importance other members of the same group. Nevertheless, the lecturer dispute this statements. Lecturer delineates that, the influential member of the group often disregard non-influential members opinion. And the influential members shirk others choices, ideas.
Third, the passage assumes that, when people are working together they have the chance to get the reward due to the various expertise comments and their arduous efforts. The lecturer states the position is problematic. He or she expose that, some are the members always get benefits from group success without doing any effort than others members who gave great effort. And he or she calls them free rider.
