Some students prefer classes with frequent discussions between the professor and the students with almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with many lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
I prefer classes with frequent discussions between the professor and the students with almost no lectures. Personally, I believe that it’s a more efficient way to learn. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
First of all, it develops high-level intellectual abilities. While classes with many lectures and almost no discussions develop memory above all things, classes with more discussions and almost no lectures force you to find your own opinion, to find arguments to defend it and to criticize the opinions of your professor and your classmates. My personal experience is a compelling example of this. I had both systems of classes when y was a student, and I certainly think I learned more with the discussions than with the lectures. I had better grades in classes with more discussions and I think I remember more of the things I learned in this classes than the things I learned in classes with more lectures, so I thing the quality of the learning process is better in the discussions.
Secondly, classes with many lectures demands the students participation more. While lectures need the students to hear and remember, discussions need both things, but also need the students to express themselves and to interact with one another and with the professor. For instance, while I got sleep frequently in classes with a lot of lectures, in discussions I was mostly awake, paying attention and participating. It’s easier to pay attention if the class is more dynamic, too. I can remember professors finding which students wasn´t paying attention to the discussions when they asked them about their opinion. In lectures, on the other hand, professors hardly ever asked students about anything, and were mostly worried about finishing the lecture.
That’s why prefer classes with more discussions than classes with more lectures.
