The pie chart indicates the reasons for agricultural land degradation over the world while the table compares the causes of land degradation in the 1990s in three specific regions: North America, Europe, Oceania.
Globally, 65% of land degradation was caused by animal grazing and tree clearance, constituting 35% and 30% respectively. Another reason for less productive land was due to over-cultivation, which made up roughly 28%. Others just accounted for a minority percentage of 7%.
These causes affected regions differently in the 1990s. Europe had as much as 9.8% degradation due to deforestation while the impact of this on North America and Oceania was minimal, with 0.2% and 1.7% respectively. Europe suffered from a great loss of land (23%) was also due to over-cultivation (7.7%) and over-grazing (5.5%). Oceania, on the contrary, had most land destroyed mainly by over-grazing (11.3%) and the total loss of land was 10% lower than Europe. North America had the lowest proportion of land degradation with a minority percentage of 5% caused mainly by over-cultivation (3.3%) and over-grazing (1.5%).
In conclusion, Europe experienced a great loss of farmland than any other region by deforestation mainly.
