The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.
The pictures compare two different measures can be taken to protect houses from being damaged in flooding areas.
We can see that a stopbank in the first diagram that can stop flood under a century-year level while in the second one there is higher frames under houses but no stopbank between houses and the river. It is necessary for both designs to keep a gap between the building and the water surface.
The most noticeable difference between two images is there is a stopbank, making of a berm and floodgate, in the first one to create an internal ponding between the drain and the house. With the obstacle, the water which is under the level of once 100 years from the river cannot reach the house. Even though rainwater may come from the internal run, it still can leave 300 mm freeboard between the house floor and the ponding level.
If there is no stopbank, the house needs more space from the ground level to the floor level. In the second diagram, the house is in the middle of the water path linking from the internal area to the river. To protect the house from 100-year lever flood, higher frames will be installed.
