The line chart illustrates data on the changes in the electricity generation from various sources (coal, natural gas, and petroleum) supplied to New York City over two decades, starting from 1980.
Overall, petroleum exploitation for electricity was by far the largest among other forms of energy. Additionally, there was a significant increase in electricity production from natural gas, while the opposite was true for the case of coal throughout the observed period.
More specifically, petroleum had the highest electricity generation in 1980, with roughly 350 million kW hours, reaching a peak of 600 million kW hours in 1985. It, however, experienced a sharp decrease to the initial figure before rising substantially by over 300 million kW hours at the end of the period.
On the other hand, natural gas generated the least amount of electricity in the first five years, remaining stable at around 100 million kW hours, followed by a significant climb to over 450 million kW hours in 1995. This figure slightly rose by 50 million kW hours during the last five years.
Meanwhile, the figure for coal increased steadily between over 200 and 300 million kW hours in 1980 and 1985, respectively. This figure, however, gradually fell and remained constant at about 200 million kW hours in 2000.
