The diagram compares the different quantities of goods in UK that were transported in four distinct means of transportation from 1974 to 2002, in 4-yearly intervals.
Overall, all modes experienced rises over the period except for railways which fluctuated in the middle. Besides, roadways were the most popular among four type of means, while pipeline contributed the least figure.
In 1974, water and rail shared almost equal proportion at around 40 million tones of goods, and both of them remained relatively unchanged until 1978. However, the number of goods delivered by water increased considerably in 1982 and hit over 60 million in the last year. In contrast, the latter showed a fluctuation between 1982 and 1994 before reaching a little more than 40 million.
Road transport stood at 70 million tones initially, rising steadily until 1990 when it reached over 80 million. After a slight fall in the next four years, it continued to rise gradually for the following years to reach a high of just below 100 million.
There was a gradual growth in quantity of goods transported by pipeline, from around 5 million from 1974 to a little over 20 million in 2002.
