Franchise
The article and the lecture are both about franchise companies. Franchise concept is issued licensed by a big well-known company to the small business with percent of sales. While the author talks about the three benefits of having a franchise business, the lecturer from the listening passage challenges the author’s points according to a recent research about that topic.
First of all, the writer starts by stating that finding suppliers, materials and maintenance goods to a new business is usually a painful process but having a parent company helps them to ease these issues. The lecturer, and the contrary, challenges this point by saying that the guidance of the parent company leads the small businesses to purchase expensive materials. She continues by saying even though there are cheaper options available in the market, the parent company is not allowing the new business to buy those ones.
Secondly, according to the writer another advantage of a franchise is that the new business owners do not need to pay any amount for the advertisement since the parent company already covers the advertisement process and its costs. The professor, however, claims that those ads are not specific to the new business, on the contrary they are the parent companies own advertisements. She adds that those commercials are not unique to the local products of the business therefore the parent company actually makes its own advertisements not the local new business.
Lastly, the author claims that franchise offers more security than starting a brand-new business, therefore the risk of losing money is quite low. The professor agrees with the author on that, but she adds that, according to recent research there is a third option which is even more profitable than the franchise business, she adds that the author did not mention this option. She continues by introducing the third option, which is buying an already-existing business from its owner and moreover she continues by adding that the chance of success with the third option is twice as high as having the franchise.
