Instead of holding books or newspapers, people nowadays normally hold electronic devices and watch bright screens to receive information and news. Although it is much more comfortable than reading through paper materials, there are many side effects of electronic devices.
First, learning through screens disturbs people's critical thinking. Most of the contents on the Internet are usually from ordinary people who do not have professional views. Also, some people abuse their contents to make people believe them without any doubts. It gradually stops users from bothering to question the source of information.
Second, electronic devices are harmful to our health. People who frequently use computers or mobile phones are more likely to have serious eye problems or brain damage, such as cataract or cerebral strokes. Although blue light filters have been made to solve the health problems, it does not stop electronic devices from releasing electromagnetic waves that damage brain cells and many other body parts.
Lastly, electronic devices cause addiction, which blocks communication between people. An experiment was held with two groups of kids aged 12. One group was asked to use electronic devices for five days, while the other was told to read paper materials only. In the end, the group that used paper materials performed way better at recognizing personal emotions, language skills, and creative thinking. The kids that were told to use electronic devices showed anxiety and a lack of social skills after their devices were taken away.
The reading and the lecture are about the harmful effects of electronic devices on people. The author of the reading feels that electronic devices are imposing a negative impact on people's life. However, the lecturer challenges all the claims made by the author and elaborates hereunder.
First of all, the professor mentions that reading newspapers will not improve critical thinking. Moreover, the information we get by reading paper materials is always limited and it revolves around a precise author. This makes the reader to have biased thoughts. On the other hand, electronic devices offer readers to think in a broader perspective by approaching vivid materials. The reading contradicts this point, by mentioning that overuse of screens will impede people's critical thinking and the information over the internet is not reliable as it is written by mundane people rather than professionals.
Secondly, the passage posits that using electronic devices is very harmful to health as they cause eye defects such as cataracts and even more, cerebral strokes. All these problems are due to the emission of the electromagnetic waves from the electronic devices. On the contrary, the tutor says that even by reading books people have several health issues like neck problems and headaches. In addition to that, taking regular intervals between any source of usage will help in avoiding major health issues. She even tells us that it is a matter of body habits we make.
Finally, academician implies that using electronic devices increases social skills by connecting to people. Additionally, the information we get through electronic media cannot be obtained by reading paper materials. Furthermore, we can even share our thoughts with the people over the internet. Thus, the information is plenty and updated over the internet than books. This point is contradicted in the writing saying that using electronic devices creates addiction among people which in turn destroys the communication abilities with their surrounding people and proved through an experiment.
