The reading and the lecture are both about the best way to approach some projects is group activity. The author of the reading feels that approaching projects as a group is more effective than individual. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this idea. He says that group activity can account for the opposite effect to complete a project.
To begin with, the author argues that a group of people has a wider range of knowledge than an individual; they approach a project in many different ways. Therefore, group activity has more possibility to complete a project more thoroughly and perfectly. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that not every team member contributes to a project. They enjoy the free-ride for the project. Hence, some people who contribute a lot feel unfair about receiving the same guarantee with people who did not contribute at all.
Secondly, the writer suggests that a group of people make a faster decision to finish a project than an individual. Group has more people than an individual, and they invent various creative solutions for projects. Hence, it takes little time to finish it. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that it is not quick to reach the result of the project when they act as a group. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that it takes so much time to integrate each of members’ opinions. There must be conflict between members because everyone doesn’t have the same judgement.
Finally, the author posits that each of the members can shine when they are in a group. Some members who are influential in a group praise other members when they contribute to a project, and it encourages members to be confident about what they do. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that influential members do not praise other members in reality. Actually, most of them ignore other member’s opinions and ideas. However, if they failed a project to complete, all blame will be placed on all of the members.
