Both reading and writing discuss about a solution toward prohibiting desertification which is using a small vehicle. The auther states some points against this solution while the professor disagrees, explaining why it can be an efficient way to stop desertification.
First, the reading states the cost of these vehicles are so high that some countries cannot afford it. In contrast, the speaker mentions that each vehicle can be used 20 times and there is no need to provide one for each tree. Therefore, the cost can be noticeably decreased.
Second, based on reading, for mentioned solution, local people have to look for these vehicle which is time consuming and local people may not accept this. On the other hand, the lecturer explains that there can be some benefits for local people that make an insentive for them. For example, people can use the water collected by these machinese for growing their vegetables. Another benefit is that by growing trees, people can use their branches for firewood. In this case, people will accept looking for trees.
Third, the reading asserts that these vehicles are so small that once a tree grows and become big, the machine cannot provide enough water for that tree and therefore this vehicles are useless. Again, the professor casts doubt on this view. The professor says that when a tree become big, its root grows and get deep into the ground. In this way, the tree can survive without help of the vehicle. The results of an experiment showed that 90 percent of trees which were using these vehicles still keeped driving 2 years after the vehicles were removed.
In conclusion we can see that although the reading passage points some drawbacks of this solution, the professor argues in favor of the mentioned solution.
