The chart represents the proportion of households owning and renting accomodation in England and Wale from 1918 to 2011.
It is clear that the number of households owned in England and Wales increased steadily whileas there was an downward trend in the percentage of houses rented during the period between 1918 and 2011.
In 1918, more than three-quarters households are rented accomodation, three times higher than that of houses owned. The proportion of households owned rose moderately along with a drop of the figure for households rented from 1918 and in 1971 the figures for both types of households were equally 50%.
From 1971, people in England and Wales tended to prefer owning to renting houses, as the percentage of houses owned excessed that of houses reanted. The proportion for household owning accomodations had continued increasing and reached a peak at nearly 70% in 2001 before decreased slightly to 75% in 2011. The firgure for rented accomodation had dropped steadily and hit a low of 32% before increased to 35% in 2011.
