The line graph shows daily oil consumption by the US, Western Europe, Japan, China and the Middle East over a period of four years, starting from 2015.
It is noticeable that the US was by far the biggest oil consumers throughout the period shown. In addition, while there was a downward trend in oil consumption by the US and Western Europe and Japan, the opposite trend was recorded in the figure for China and the Middle East.
In 2009, the US consumed 10 million barrels of oil on a daily basis, which was five times higher than the data for China and the Middle East. The figure for Western and Japan stood at 4 million in 2009, which experienced a fall of 1 million to 3 million barrels 3 years later. By contrast, there was an increase in the oil consumption by Western Europe and Japan and the Middle East, with the figures rising to 3 and 2,2 million barrels in 2012, respectively.
Between 2012 and 2019, a steady climb to reach a peak of 3 million was witnessed in the amount of oil consumed by the Middle East. China’s oil consumption peaked at 3.7 million in 2015, which then fell to 3.2 million at the end of the period. The data for China saw the most dramatic change, with the number of barrels consumed fluctuating around 10 million in the first three years before a dramatic fall of 6 million was witnessed in the year 2019.
