According to the reading passage, three arguments were mentioned to support that Alaska's North Slope was inhospitable place for Edmontosaurus in wintertime, while in the listening section, lecturer stated some competing theories in order to contradict passage's arguments.
In the reading passage, author pointed out three reasons. First, since in the winter there would have been no plants, which was the diet of Edmontosaurs, it shows that the Edmontosaurs must have migrate to more temperate zones. Second, because it is suggested that Edmontosaur lived in herds, this suggestion supports that those animals would have been migrated. Finally, Edmontosaurs were physically capable of migrating long distances, so, they had to migrate 1600 kilometers southward.
However, in the listening materials, lecturer claimed that passage's arguments are not convincing, so, he mentioned some controversial theories. First, Edmontosaurus did not have to migrate, because Alaska's North Slope was warmer that today, therefore, warmer temperature created good conditions for plants, which provided Edmontosaurus's food. Second, living in herd does not necessarily mean that those animals were migrating. For example, Roosevelt elk, which animals live in a forest, they used to live in a herd, but they do not migrate at all. Finally, although adult edmontosaur were capable of migrating long distances, but juvenile edmontosaurus could not migrate long distance and they reduced the herds speed, so adult edmontosaurus did not prefer to migrate because of that reason.
