The passage and the lecture talks about a debate over Jane Austen's potrait. The only known image of Jane Austen is one painted by her sister, Cassandra, which is very "amateurish". However, another full length portrait of a teenage girl has surfaced recently and the entire discussion in the passage and the lecture revovles around whether Jane Austen is the subject of this painting.
Firstly, the passage states that in 1882, Austen's family confirmed that the portrait was hers and gave permission for its use as an illustration in one of her letters. However, the lecturer argues that Jane Austen died 70 years before this happened and none of the family members alive ever saw Austen themselves. The girl in the portrait could very well be someone else from the Austen family.
Secondly, commenting on the similar features of the girl in the portrait and in Cassandra's sketch, the lecturer explains how the extended family that Austen had was very large. Austen had many cousins who were of the age of the girl in the painting, or had daughters of that age, at the time when the portrait was drawn. The lecturer therefore feels that the painting belongs to one of these cousins who shared similar facial features with Austen. Furthermore, he mentions that some experts have stated that the girl in the painting was Austen's niece. The passage however states that the painting was of Austen herself, due to the resemblance in physical features with Cassandra's sketch.
Finally, the lecturer points out that the painting was credited to Humphrey only because of its style. However, a stamp on the back of the canvas proves that it was provided by someone who used to provide such canvases at a time when Austen was 27 years old and not a teenager. Therefore, she cannot be the girl in the painting. The author of the passage, on the other hand believes that the painting was drawn by Humphrey and since this painter was active at a time when Austen was a teenager, it must be her in the painting.
