Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture are both about the burning mirror. The author of the reading feels that the burning mirrors are just a myth because of three reasons. While the lecturer challenges the ideas that made by the author by providing opposite claims. She is of the opinion that the burning mirror was an accurate war weapon which was used during the ancient times by Greeks.
To begin with, the author argues that the ancient Greeks were not advanced enough technologically to invent a vast mirror that was accurate enough to make a ship ignite by focusing the sunrays on a specific point. The article mentions that the Greeks did not achieve that level of sophistication to manufacture such an accurate and complex weapon. The lecturer challenged this specific argument. She claims that the vast mirror was made of a thousand pieces of copper metal plates, which made it possible for Greeks in ancient times to achieve their aim.
Secondly, the writer suggests that even if they could create such an immense mirror, it took a while to trigger the fire. In the article, it is said that it almost took ten minutes to onset the burning of an object, which was only 30 meters away from the mirror. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the estimated time in the article was for wooden ships. She elaborates on this by bringing up that ships could have been made of another material during that time, such as pitch. With which, the flames could have started immediately even if the object was moving.
Finally, The author posits that the burning mirrors do not seem like an improvement on a weapon that Greeks already had. Moreover, in the article, it is stated that the flaming arrows were an efficient way of flaming the enemy's ships. Therefore, there was no need for them to invent a novel way to do that. In contrast, the lecturer position is that they had different usages. She notes that the burning arrows were an obvious way of attack because the flames were evident from the source for enemies; on the contrary, the burning mirror only seemed an immense mirror, and the shipmen did not find that they are under attack of fire until the flames were initiated. In conclusion, burning mirrors were much sufficient than flaming arrows.
