The line graph depicts records about the average amount of carbon dioixde released per person in the U.K, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007 over a 40-year period.
Overall, it is evident that the gap between four countries had narrowed. The United Kingdom and Sweden showed downward trends whereas Italy and Portugal contributed more to carbon dioxide emissions compared to the initial period.
Looking at the detail, with respect to the United Kingdom, the figure began at around 11 metric tonnes in 1967 and remained almost stable until 1977. Although the figure continued to decrease gradually and finished at just under 9 metric tonnes, the United Kingdom was still the most responsible for carbon dioxide emissions among the four countries. In the initial period, Sweden suddenly rose upwards to its peak at approximately 11 metric tonnes in 1977, but it plummeted to over 5 metric tonnes in 2007 which is the same as Portugal.
Both Italy and Portugal showed similar trends. Although Italy began at just above 4 metric tonnes, it continnued to increase to just over 6 metric tonnes in 1998 and finally overtook the figure of Sweden. The figure levelled off until 2007. Portugal was the most marginal contributor to carbon dioxide emissions, starting at slightly more than 1 metric tonnes in 1967, but soared more than three times to approximately 5 metric tonnes.
