The table shows the number of employees and factories producing silk in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901.
The given table gives information about the workforce and factories of silk production in two countries, England and Wales, in the period of 50 years from 1851 to 1901.
Overall, it can be seen that silk industry in these two countries employed more female employees than the male ones. Although there was a gradual decrease with time period in the number of total employees, the number of manufacturing silk factories increased over the 50-year period, in spite of the fluctuation.
Looking the figures for the year 1851, the total number of employees reached its peak at 130.750 people, including 53.964 males and 76.786 females. In contrast, the number of factories was the lowest in the year period, at only 272. In the next ten years, while the total number of employees witnessed a fall of over 20.000 people, the number of silk factories almost tripled and peaked at 761.
Regarding the statistic of the next 40 years, there was a significant drop in the number of both males and females, to 13.375 and 25.567, respectively. This also resulted in the decrease in the total number of employees, from 109.869 to 38.942. During 40 years after 1861, the silk industry underwent a fluctuation in the number of the factories, however, it still increased compared to the year 1851.
