The two graphs illustrates comparative data of how many international students and domestic students enrol in Australian universities over a decade.
As can be seen in the first graph, the number of commencing overseas students increased moderately, from around 10000 students in 2001 to 40000 students in 2009 and remained unchanged in 2010. In comparison, the figure of the second graph depicts that from approximately 160000 students in the beginning, the number of local students enrolling in universities rose to about 240000, fell steadily before increasing to just below the previous position in 2002.
According to the first graph again, the total international students gaining tertiary education in Australia was observed to upsurge significantly from only 20000 students in 2001 to just above 80000 students after 10 years. Similarly, the total number of domestic students also grew progressively from 400000 students initially to 600000 students in 2007 and then plateaued for the next 4 years.
Overall, local students were seen to be roughly 10 times more than overseas students in terms of enrolling in Australian universities. However, there was a considerable growth in the number of commencing international students after a decade while the number of commencing domestic students remained quite stable.
