Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they answer the specific problems presented in the reading passage.
The professor in the lecture does not agree with the reasons given in the reading passage for the non-conformity of the ownership of a portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet to a seventeenth-century Dutch painter, Rembrandt.
Firstly, the professor says that an X-ray of the painting showed that the original painting does not consist of the extravagant fur collar as shown in the portrait as it was added hundred years later by someone else to Rembrandt’s painting to make it more formal and valuable. Thus, negating the passage’s explanation that the painting is not his because of the inconsistency in the dress due to a simple linen cap of a servant and luxurious fur collar which is highly unlikely that a servant could afford.
Furthermore, the passage mentioned the incongruency in the light and shadow in the portrait which is unlike any of Rembrandt’s paintings. The lecturer corrected this reasoning by saying that the fur collar which was painted later on the painting caused this issue and that the original painting of Rembrandt consists of a light coloured clothing which reflects the light on the woman’s face.
Lastly, the author cites that the extra wood pieces were glued to the original wooden panel to add the fur collar to the painting. Thus, confirming that the portrait is that of Rembrandt. Also, the wood of the original portrait was from the same tree as the wood used by Rembrandt for his other painting - The Self portrait of a hat.
Thus, the professor does not agree with the passage and suggests that the portrait is Rembrandt’s.
