FRANCHISE AND INDIVIDUAL BUSINESSES

Essay topics:

FRANCHISE AND INDIVIDUAL BUSINESSES

Both the reading passage and the listening lecture talk about whether owning a franchise of an existing bigger brand is advantageous over starting a new independent business oneself. The former supports the idea of owning a franchise by giving three important reasons, but the latter contradicts those citing the disadvantages and dark sides of owning a franchise.

First of all, the passage states that finding a reliable and cost-effective supplier for a new business owner is a herculean task. Owners often waste a lot of money on wrong suppliers with overpriced goods and services. A franchise eliminates this problem since the brand already has fixed suppliers, thereby preventing losses of the owners. The lecture, however, cites that franchise owners are often forced to buy goods and services from specific suppliers, even when much better cheaper options are available in the market. The owner ends up wasting money in franchise as he would have in starting a new business.

Secondly, the author claims that new business owners have to spend a considerable amount of money on advertising. Franchise owners do not need to worry about the same, since the brand already has an established image and is popular in the market. The lecturer contradicts this by giving a statistic that franchise owners are still supposed to spend around 6% of their income in sales, which is a considerable amount. Moreover, the advertising money spent by the brand is focused on its products and services as a whole, and not on the business of the specific franchise owner. Individual franchise owners aren’t benefitted by the company’s advertising campaigns, and still have to spend personally to promote themselves.

Finally, the text asserts that there is a security involved in owning a franchise as compared to starting a new business. There is a high failure rate among new businesses. On the other hand, the speaker maintains that although there is lesser risk involved in owning a franchise, it is still not secure. The speaker goes on to mention a third recent trend of buying an already existing independent business from its owner. Studies have suggested this option to be twice as better in early years than owning a franchise or starting a new business.

In conclusion, the speaker rebuts all the advantages that the author mentioned in the text in favour of owning a franchise, rendering it equally costly as a new independent business. The speaker, however, suggested a third successful business approach of buying out an existing independent business.
