The bar chart shows active participation rates in top ten sports in Canada in 1998 and 2005
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar chart illustrates the comparison between the two years, 1998 and 2005, in terms of the proportion of Canadians who participated in several sports, such as tennis, cycling, soccer, and so on. Overall, it can be seen that golf and ice hockey were the two most attractive sports in Canada, whereas tennis, cycling, and skiing attracted the least number of players over the period given. Additionally, almost all the participation rates in 2005 were lower than in 1998, except for soccer.
Looking at the graph, the data indicate that in 1998, the figure for golf participants was the highest, at nearly 25%, followed by people who play ice hockey and baseball, with 18% and 17%, respectively. The fourth most popular sport was swimming, with almost 13% of players. The rest of the sports, namely tennis, cycling, alpine skiing, volleyball, basketball, and soccer, witnessed a fairly similar proportion, in the middle of 7% and 9%.
In 2005, although the percentages of participants who play golf and ice hockey diminished by 2% each, these sports were still ranked as the lion's share of choices, with 21% and 17%. Baseball observed a significant fall from 17% to 6%. Besides, remaining sports such as tennis, cycling, downhill, and alpine skiing, volleyball, basketball, and swimming had a drop of about 1% to 2% in the proportion of Canadians who played them. An opposite trend could be seen in that the figure for soccer players rose slightly by 2%, to reach approximately 10% of Canadians who preferred this sport as their leisure time activity.
