Rembrandt was a famous artist
Both the passage and the lecture discusses about whether the famous art known as 'Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet' can or cannot be identified as a work by Rembrandt. The passage discusses three reasons why it is not a work by Rembrandt, but the lecture opposes all three claims.
First, the passage claims that there is an incosistency in the dress of the women which is an unusual mistake for a fastidious painter like Rembrandt. The hat worn by the woman was a servent's hat. But she is also wearing an expensive fur collar. But the lecturer presents findings of a recent study where it was proved that the collar was painted after more than 100 years later by someone else to increase its value by presenting it as a aristrocrat woman's portrait. So, as without the fur collar, the painting is actually consistent.
Second, the passage suggests that the work of light and shadow is also inconsistent because the light was coming from below and the face was illuminated, though the dark color collar should absorb the light and the face should have some shadow. However, the lecturer argues that as the actual painting had not have the collar and wearing a light color dress, the face being illuminated is also usual. So, the actual painting contains the usual light and shadow work of Rembrandt.
Third reason the passage presents is that the it was painted on more than one piece of wood glued together, which Rembrandt never did. In the lecture, it was claimed that the research shows that the original painting was on one piece of wood, and the other pieces were added later to look it grand and more valuable. Even the original piece of wood was from the same tree Rembrandt used for one of his own portrait. So, it can be attributed to him.
With all these new information from a research, the lecturer opposes the passage's claim and argues that the painting was actullay painted by Rembrandt.
