Eco certification and American wood companies Integrated Reading Section In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standar

Wood industries are one of the leading industries around the globe. Similarly, in the United States, the wood industries are one of the biggest industries. The passage and the lecture both talks about promoting sustainable wood industry through certification that meet ecological standards by conserving the resources and recycling. The author of the passage points out that the eco-certifications will not be efficient for the US based companies, while the lecture opposes the author with various reasons.

Firstly, the author points out that American consumers don’t trust the advertisement claims anymore. However, the lecture opposes with a point that, American do not believe the companies which make advertisements for themselves. He further thinks that certification by an international independent organization will be welcomed by the Americans.

Secondly, the author claims that Americans are strongly driven by the price factor. ECO certified wood will increase the cost and eventually increase the price of the products. On the contrary, the lecture claims that the change in price will not be more than 5 percent and will not impact the consumer’s behavior towards the product.

Thirdly, the author claims that the US wood products are sold in the domestic markets only and the Eco certification is viable only if the products are for exports. In contrast, the lecture claims that non certification of local companies will attract competition from internationally certified wood companies, who would in turn dominate the wood market in the united states.
