To meet the growing needs of food for the increasing population, country should make use of edible insects as foods. However, some people believe that insects are not only unhealthy but also affect negatively the nature too. What are the benefits and drawbacks of eating insects?
Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
In the light of the burgeoning numbers of people, food security has been one of the greatest issues facing global governments. In that context, there have been suggestions that insects should be used as food. While some people contend with this idea, others claim the opposite as they fear the practice may be harmful to humans. However, consuming insects has both advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, it is irrefutable that eating bugs may yield unexpected benefits. Bugs are believed to be healthy and nutritious as they contain as many nutrients as meat does. In addition, insects are usually abundant and easy to find, thus allowing eating these species to be a feasible solution to the current world hunger. Moreover, consuming insects can help reduce negative impacts on the environment. Because insects can not only emit far less greenhouse gas but also use up less water and land than other livestock do, they can contribute to protecting nature.
Despite the above arguments, consuming insects as food may have some drawbacks. First, bugs can be unhygienic and repulsive. As not all insect farms follow high hygienic standards, some bugs are unsafe to consume. In addition, some insects usually feed on decaying matter such as human waste, rotting food, and animal corpses, they are not always suitable to be made into dishes. Other insects may feed on vegetables in the field, which can be full of pesticides and fertilizers, thus making bugs dangerous and unwholesome food.
In conclusion, though eating insects have some demerits as stated above, it is reasonable to make use of these creatures as food due to the nutritional value and societal benefits they create.
