The passage and lecture both raise the concerns of increasing salt level in the Salton Sea, which would be a threat to the life of the inhabitant fishs and birds. Whilst, the author believes that this problem can be addressed by three specific solutions, the lecturer opposes the author’s claims. In her opinion, these solutions do not hold water.
First, the author claims that salt level will drop by desalination. To be specific, it is stated in the article that through special facilities, the water in the lake will evaporate into the steam and returned to the lake as water without any salt. In contrast, the lecturer argues that by evaporating the lake water, not only the salt that dissolved in the water will be left behind, but also other toxic chemicals as well. Additionally, he maintains that these toxic chemicals are capable to spread through the air, which further endangers people’s life in the neighborhood.
Second, the author mentions that diluting the lakes with water from the Pacific Ocean will help to reduce the level of salinity. On top of that, he adds that because the water from the ocean is not as salty as the water from the lake, delivering the ocean water into the lake through pipelines or canals would reduce the salt level in the lakes. However, the lecturer brings up doubt to this solution because building the pipelines or canals will demand a huge amount of financial support, which is not possible at this stage. Further, he remarks that the local government have limited resources to construct the pipelines or canals when it comes to a project of 100 kilometers distance long.
Finally, the author asserts that creating walls to separate the lakes into several sections could regulate and lower the salinity level. He goes on to say that even though the salinity level will be higher in the small sections, the salt level in the main section will be lessened due to the osmolarity effect causing freshwater influx. As appose to the author, the lecturer holds that this solution is not long-lasting because the lake is located in the place where earthquakes usually happen. He highlights that when the major earthquake strikes, it will destroy these walls and the high and low salt-leveled water will be mixed back to the default.
- Governments should spend more money in support of arts than in support of athletics such as state sponsored Olympic teams 83
- TPO 54 The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake The level of salt in the lake s water what scientists call its salinity has been increasing steadily for years because the lake s water is evaporating faster than it is being repla 88
