The bar charts illustrate the proportion of households in private and hired accommodation in two nations England and Wales from 1918 to 2011
In general, it is clear that the percentage of households in rented accommodation saw a descending trend while the opposite was the case for the other.
At the start of the period, the proportion of households in rented housing was significantly higher than the percentage of households in owned, just over 20% compared to nearly 80%. Until 1971, the percentage of both situations was exactly the same, at 50 %. However, the figure for the owned accommodation was two times higher than those of the rented household in 2011, 65% in comparison with 35%.
Afterward, there was a significant increase in the percentage accommodation from just over 20% in 1918 to nearly 70% in 2001, before it dropped slightly at 65% in the last year 2011. In contrast, the proportion of households in rented housing witnessed a decrease between 77% in 1918 and just over 30% in 2001, and it rose slightly to 65% in the final year.
