Broccoli is a vegetable that is popular throughout the United States, but it can be grown only in temperate climates with mild summers. Because of this limitation, 90 percent of the broccoli consumed in the United States is grown in the cooler regions of California, on the West Coast. It must be shipped 4000 kilometers across the entire country to reach the populous East Coast This situation may soon change. However, scientists are attempting to create a new type of broccoli that can be grown on the East Coast despite the hotter summers there. This project has several potential benefits.
The reading and the lecture are both about harvesting new kinds of broccoli in local areas. The author of the reading provides three examples of the benefit of a new breed of broccoli, which will be beneficial, despite growing in hot areas. However, the lecturer disputes all the claims made in the passage.
First of all, the author claims that the price of broccoli will be lower since transportation costs will reduce. In contrast, the professor points out that because of the hot weather, new broccoli will have lower yields, which in turn, the market price will become high and cannot support transport costs.
Secondly, the reading passage explains that a new breed of broccoli, which will have a unique production way that it will be resistant in hot summer, as well as will not be genetically modified. However, the professor contradicts that people will be suspicious of the production since new broccoli will be grown by the same company, that used the genetic change in other vegetables a few years back. She goes on to say that local people will reject it, because it is not safe and deteriorate health.
Finally, in contrast to the reading passage point that acquiring nutrients from new vegetables is advantageous compared to the contents of nutrients of far places, however, the professor contradicts that there is not only broccoli in local places. So, instead of growing up-to-date broccoli, local people should focus on educating people about harvesting calve, a vegetable that grows every season and is far more beneficial than broccoli.
