In the reading passage, the author explains that self-driving, autonomous cars have three major advantages. The professor, on the other hand, thinks that people pretend that self-driving cars would cure all problems, and points out that people ignore them.
Firstly, human mistakes cause lots of car accidents, and supports their theory by explaining that autonomous cars are coded and not capable of making mistakes. In contrast, the professor argues that the softwares used in these cars are in fact human coded and they are prone to errors. Additionally, the professor comments that the 700.000 miles recorded, which a self-driving car drives without any accident, just resulted in an accident last month.
The passage claims that self-driving cars are good for the environment, since cars communicate with each other so as to reduce the traffic. However, in the lecture, it is countered that traffic won’t reduce. He supports this theory by hypothesizing the abolishment of the age restrictions. Therefore, the number of people driving cars will increase which results in more traffic. Moreover, the lecturer points out that even though there will be less harm to the environment from an individual car, in total, because of the increase in car population, the pollution will also increase.
Lastly, the author presents the time efficiency of autonomous cars. This would provide time for other activities such as watching videos or work. On the other hand, the professor examines this from another perspective. He found that driving a car is actually relaxing and provides good mental health to people by getting away from the work stress.
Overall, although the passage gives some advantages of self-driving cars, the professor contradicts with the claims given by explaining his own arguments.
