Recycling rates for selected materials
The graphic in question shows the recycling rate of four group of materials throughout 28 years in a particular country. The material groups are the following ones: paper and cardboards, glass containers, aluminum cans, and plastics, represented in a blue, red, green and gray line respectively.
Overall, the rate of recycling has been increasing along the years with regards all the material groups except paper and cardboards. The last peaked in 1994 when it reached 80% of recycling rate, then decreased by 10% during the following 16 years. Despite of this decline, paper and cardboard are the most common materials recycled in the past three decades.
Opposed to paper and cardboards, the recycling of glass, plastic, and aluminum have been increasing in the last two decades. 60% of the glass containers was recycled in 2010 in comparison to only 40% in 1990. The recycling of plastic is increasing in a quite slow rate, it went from about 2% in 1990 to 8% twenty years later. Whereas the recycling of aluminum jumped from 2% in 1986 to incredible 45% in 2010, being the most exponential increasing curve among all the four material groups.
In conclusion, the graphic shows positive trends towards an increase of recycling over time. This might reflect a larger awareness regarding environmental preservation of the today’s society when compared to thirty years ago.
