The chart illustrates the proportion of the government expenditure on infrastructure (roads and transport) in 4 different nations through the years 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.
What stands out from the chart is that governments in Italy and Portugal spent more money on roads and traffic than UK and US countries. As you can see, the UK was the country expending the least money on two types of infrastructure.
In 1990, Portugal was considered the biggest spender on roads and traffic, about 27%. While the percentage of Italy’s expenditure ranked second at approximately 23%, that of the USA and UK ranked third and fourth respectively, at 12% and 11%. However, in 1995, the proportion of government spending on roads and transport reduced slightly (from 1 to 3%) in all 4 countries.
By 2000, while the percentage of Portugal’s expenditure on road and transport continued to reduce at around 22%, Italy was the leading spender on infrastructure. At the same time, Great Britain and the USA had also increased their transport budget rapidly to 12 and 13%. In 2005, all countries except the USA fell, including Italy at 19%, Portugal at 20%, and the UK at 7%.
