The given bar graph shows data on the number of male and female research students who were studying in six different subjects in an US university in 2011. Those subjects are classified as linguistics, psychology, natural sciences, engineering, programming and mathematics.
Overall, both genders interested the most in studying natural sciences and psychology. The most male students studied in a computer programming related subjects such as math, engineering and natural sciences whereas females studied in psychology and linguistics. The gender gap was particularly large in the field of mathematics, where five times as many male students studied as female students.
As shown in the graph, an equal number of 200 students in male and female studied in natural sciences. The number stays the same in psychology and math classes for men whereas the number of women students drops from 170 to 40 in psychology and math classes respectively. The highest number of female students studied linguistic at over 100 students compared to 70 of male students.
Engineering and programming classes show 80 and 60 students in female, respectively while the exact same number of 150 male students chose to study within those classes.
