life on venus
The passage presents arguments about the impossibility of human life on Venus because of its inhospitable and extreme conditions. The lecturer contradicts this concept and claims that the issues raised in the passge can all be resolved if a floating station, like a balloon, could be established fifty kilometeres above the surface of Venus. His further demonstrations are as follows.
Firstly, although the pressure is too extreme on the surface of Venus, as we know from the principals of physics, with increasing distance from the surface, the pressure drops. Therefore, the pressure on the floating station would be equal to the pressure we exprience on the surface of the planet earth.
Secondly, there is no water or oxygen on the surface and in the atmosphere of Venus. However, the nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and sulfuric acid in the atmosphere can be transformed to water and oxygen through chemical reactions taking place in the floating station. Thus, the transfer of water and oxygen would not be necessary.
Finally, whereas there are still clouds fifty kilometeres above the surface of Venus, they are not as thick as they are in lower latitudes. Additionally, the clouds that are positioned below the station would reflect the sunlight. Hence, the floating station would be able to use both the direct and the reflected sunlight to generate adequate solar power for their equipments.
