Is franchise the safer way to start a business?
There is a thing called a franchise that is a license issued by a large company to a small business, and most people see it as the least risky way to start a business. However, the lecture says that studies have raised some questions about the advantages of franchises.
The lecture first says that by signing the franchise, small business owners are forced to buy the large company's products, which are normally overpriced, meaning that they are more expensive than other products. In other words, the small company is forced to buy more expensive products to sell from the large company, instead of the cheaper products sold on the market.
The next question raised by studies is that instead of advertising the small business, the large company advertises its own company and its own products. Small businesses pay one-twentieth of their income to make the large company advertise for it, but the large company advertises for itself only. The small companies get little benefit. The benefit is much smaller than what the business will get if it spends one-fortieth of its income on advertising.
The last point that the lecture makes is that although franchises are more secure than starting an independent business, there is a safer way to start a business than a franchise: buying an existing company from a business manager. Research shows that this has twice as much chance of success than franchises.
