Furthermore, the expenditure in fish importing went up significantly by around 2 billion dollars in 1992, of which almost half of them were purchased from countries other than Canada and China. In contrast, Canada and China sold fish to the US at only one-third and one-fifth of the total.
In addition, spending more than 10 billion dollars in 2000, the US reached a peak in terms of imported fish consumption.
