The two graphs below show the percentage of smokers and the consumption of alcohol in litres in selected countries, for the period 1960-2000.
The first line graph compares the proportion of population who smoke everyday in terms of percentage and the second one reveals information regarding the consumption of alcohol per capita in terms of litres in some countries between 1960 and 2000.
Overall, smokers population in all three countries(USA, Japan, and Holland) experienced a dramatic decline over the 40-year period. However, a significant rise in alcohol consumption could be seen in Holland throughout the same period.
In 1960, Holland had the highest number of smokers with around 60% of the population, followed by Japan with 49%, and the USA with 40%. Interestingly, by 2000, all countries had shown a remarkable drop in the number of smokers, making the USA the country with the lowest number of smokers, at approximately 20% of the population.
Turning to alcohol consumption, in 1960, an average American drank about 8 litres of alcohol, and that was four times higher than that consumed by Hollanders, and eight times by Turks. However, starting from 1976, Holland overtook the USA in the amounts of alcohol consumed per person, becoming the most alcohol drunk country, whereas Turks maintained their limit at around 1.8 litres over the whole period, remaining the lowest of all.
