Both the reading and the lecture are about the population decline of the yellow cedar trees in North America. While the author of the reading argues that the main reasons of this phenomena can be insects attack, bears, and climate change, the professor disputes. He states the main reason of the yellow cedar population reduction is still a mystery, and none of the reasons mentioned in the reading is adequate. The professor casts doubt on the points made in the reading by providing three controversial reasons.
In the reading passage, the author begins by saying that the insects invasion, particularly the cedar bark beetle, is one reason contributes in the yellow cedar population decline. However, the professor disagrees with this idea. He assets that healthy yellow cedar trees are very resistant to insects and parasites as their bark contains some chemical stuff which is toxic for the insects. Also, he says that damaged trees, which were found covered by insects, were already damaged and dead.
Furthermore, according to the reading passage, bears is another reason for this phenomena since they damage the trees with their claws to eat its bark. On the other hand, the professor points out that bears can not be considered as a cause to this decline although the may damage the trees. He says that the population of these trees has declined all over the coast of the North America even in places where there are no bears.
Finally, the author believes that climate change and its impact on the root system of these trees is another contributing factor. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this assertion by contending that frost damage usually occures in the highest elevation where the nights are very cold and freezing. However, the amount of dying yellow cedar trees are much higher in lower elevation, where the climate is relatively warmer, than the higher elevation, so this factor is not reasonbale.
To sum up, both the writer and lecturer hold conflicting views on the reaosns of the yellow cedar population reduction.
