Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss whether the private collection of fossils is a good idea or not. The former argues that this practice is disadvantageous for three reasons, however, the latter contradicts each of these points.
First of all, the author contends that the public will not be able to view the fossils if private collectors own all of them thus decreasing interest in science. In contrast, the lecture argues that public exposure will actually rise because low-level institutions and schools will have the ability to purchase them on the open market.
Second of all, the reading asserts that scientists will lose access to fossils if most of them are acquired by private collectors. However, the professor proclaims that scientists have to view the fossils first before private collectors in order to accurately value and catalog them. Thus, scientists will always be the people who have the first access to fossils.
Finally, the text states that private collectors are not trained scientists and thus do much damage to the fossils when they uncover them. On the other hand, the listening counters that, while some damage is done by private collectors, the situation is preferable because if they didn’t look for fossils, many would simply remain in the ground undiscovered.
